Nepenthes villosa
Nepenthes villosa Hook.f. is a species of Nepenthes found exclusively on Mount Kinabalu and the neighbouring Mount Tambuyukon in Sabah (Borneo). It grows terrestrially in moss-rich mountain forests and, in the summit region, on ultramafic soils at altitudes of approximately 2,300–3,240 m.
It is characterised by its stocky, robust pitchers with an exceptionally wide, heavily ribbed peristome. Its long, inward-facing ribs give the pitcher opening a serrated appearance. The pitchers, leaves and shoots are densely covered with long, rust-brown hairs – a characteristic to which the specific epithet villosa (‘shaggy’, ‘long-haired’). Of the closely related species Nepenthes edwardsiana and N. macrophylla, N. villosa in particular by its dense hairiness and its broad, strongly ribbed peristome.
It is quite demanding to cultivate. This is a true highland species. Cool nights are absolutely essential!
