Meet the vicious looking Heliamphora uncinata! This species is easily recognizable with its sharply-pointed hooked spoons which it is named for (from Latin uncinus-hooked).
The plants are only known from the type locality in a narrow canyon of Amuri Tepui (Chimanta Massif) at elevation of 1850m. However, the entire range is heavily dissected by many such canyons and gorges and it is possible that the species is more widely spread. As is the case with many Heliamphora, exploration of the habitat is difficult and so no further observations have been made.
H. uncinata grows directly rooted to sandstone cliffs that are permanently kept wet by water coming down from the mountain top. The habitat of H. uncinata is very similar to that of H. exappendiculata which is widely spread in the general area and so it has been hypothesized that the former evolved from the latter.
H. uncinata pitchers are up to 35cm tall and typically an even shade of light green, though if exposed to higher light they become orangey-red. The spoons are always red. Certain clones can get that big in cultivation though generally the plants are smaller.
This curiously shaped Heliamphora is a fascinating species to add to the collection. It’s a steady grower that poses no difficulties. Highly recommended.
