Myrmecodia archboldiana (Irian Jaya)

Product information "Myrmecodia archboldiana (Irian Jaya)"

Only a few seedlings available!

Unique species!

The plants hang like Christmas tree baubles from their roots in the trees and grow vertically downwards. At first you think it's an "accident" when you see plants hanging from the trees like this. In reality, however, this is a very sophisticated adaptation. There are holes near the base of the roots through which the dew and rainwater, which is collected by the long root tendril, is channelled directly into the caudex. There is even an overflow to prevent the plants from becoming too heavy!

The seeds of this species germinate on the branches and initially grow as young plants like typical epiphytic Myrmecodias.

The roots anchor themselves in the bark and become longer and longer in older plants, so that the plants eventually detach from the wood and hang freely.
