Myrmecodia pendens
Myrmecodia pendens Merr. & Perry is a myrmecophytic species of the family Rubiaceae, found in western New Guinea, where it grows epiphytically in lowland forests. The name pendens refers to the plant’s characteristic pendulous growth habit.
Characteristic of the species is an elongated cylindrical to club-shaped, usually pendulous grey-brown to dark brown caudex with conspicuous whitish longitudinal ribs. Numerous simple, slender spines are arranged along these ribs; the entrance openings to the ant chambers are arranged in rows and surrounded by small pores. The mostly unbranched shoots bear narrow elliptical to lanceolate, leathery leaves with a wedge-shaped base and a long, tapering tip. The midrib is clearly prominent on the underside of the leaf.
