I’m not really sure whether this is Myrmecodia sterrophylla. To be honest, I can see significant differences from the described characteristics, particularly regarding the shape of the caudex. However, Myrmecodia is the only Myrmecodia species mentioned in Jebb (BLUMEA 37 (1993)) for the area around the Anggi Lakes. I suspect that this is actually a species that has not yet been described.

Myrmecodia sterrophylla

Myrmecodia sterrophylla Merr. & Perry is a myrmecophytic species of the family Rubiaceae, found in the highland regions of New Guinea. It grows both epiphytically and terrestrially in nutrient-poor habitats, including the area of Anggi Lakes (Western New Guinea).

A characteristic feature of the species is a broad, cylindrical to conical caudex, which is often curved downwards and ribbed. The surface bears simple, slender spines that are black at the base and reddish to orange towards the tip. The unbranched shoots bear narrow elliptical to slightly oblanceolate, leathery leaves with a prominent midrib and white to red petioles. The white, heterostylous flowers are borne in the leaf axils
