Matthew Jebb lists this beautiful species in his monograph as a type of Myrmecodia tuberosa.
After I saw Myrmecodia spec. "versteegii" in various places in Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea and the plants were often found sympatric with "typical" Myrmecodia tuberosa forms and no intermediate forms are known, I consider it a good and independent species - moreover one of the most beautiful of the genus!
