Product information "Nepenthes lowii (Mt Kina., Borneo)"
the shape of these tall pitchers also forms the basis for an absolutely fascinating mutualistic relationship. N. lowii secretes a sugary substance between the bristles on the pitcher lid. This serves as food for the tree shrews (Tupaia montana) and leads to the animals subsequently depositing their faeces. These faeces serve as a source of nitrogen for Nepenthes lowii. Whilst the
ground-level pitchers of this species already display the bristles, they are not as extremely funnel-shaped as the tall pitchers. The tall pitchers are highly variable and can display a range of colours.
Nepenthes lowii is found on Mt Kinabalu, Trusmadi, Murud and Mulu, as well as other mountains in Borneo, at altitudes of 1,650–2,600 metres above sea level. Under the
right conditions, N. lowii is fairly easy to grow.
