Apart from N. masoalensis, Nepenthes madagascariensis is the only pitcher plant found in Madagascar. Nepenthes madagascariensis is an interesting species due to its isolated location and is significantly more robust in care than N. masoalensis, but it also requires warm temperatures and good nutrition.
Along the east coast between Maroansetra and Tolagnaro, it inhabits various habitats below 500 metres above sea level, making it the more euryoecious of the two species. The characteristic yellow, funnel-shaped tall pitchers of N. madagascariensis are very attractive. The ground pitchers are red in colour and cylindrical in shape, with a widened base. Similar to Nepenthes bicalcarata, this species also has two toothed extensions of the peristome under the lid. While the ground pitchers are primarily specialised in catching ants, significantly more flying insects end up in the liquid in the high pitchers.
A recommended species, of which unfortunately there are hardly any larger specimens in cultivation.
