Nepenthes mirabilis var. echinostoma is a variety of N. mirabilis that was sought after for years, but was hardly available. While the regular N. mirabilis is a less spectacular species, there are two very interesting varieties of it.
N. mirabilis var. echinostoma shows a feature that is unique in the genus. The unusually broad peristome shows tentacle-like outgrowths. Especially when opening the pitchers, these protrude particularly far and are conspicuous. Incredibly bizarre!
The name "Echinostoma" translates to "sea urchin mouth/opening" and aptly describes the appearance of the appendages of this variety.
In the wild, N. mirabilis var. echinostoma is known to occur in Brunei and Sarawak, where it is found at 0-200 m.a.s.l. in the lowlands.
