Nepenthes rhombicaulis is a species from the highlands of Sumatra. Often the species is found along the routes at 1700-1900 m.a.s.l.. Characteristic for this species is the occurrence in the underground of the forest, even in low light. The lower pitchers or even whole parts of the plants may be partially or completely buried in detritus or moss. Pitchers growing under such conditions are supposed to grow larger than free-standing pitchers.
The epithet rhombicaulis means rhomboid stem and refers to the shape of the internodal cross-section.
