Selaginella tamariscina
Selaginella tamariscina (P.Beauv.) Spring is a member of the moss ferns (Selaginellaceae) and is found in East and South-East Asia, from China and Korea through Japan to South-East Asia. The species grows on rocky slopes, in sparse woodlands and in open, sunny locations, where it is exposed to repeated periods of drought.
The plant forms densely branched, prostrate shoots with scale-like leaves. Older specimens often develop upright, stem-like structures, which do not result from secondary thickening but are formed from a dense accumulation of dead shoots, roots and rhizophores. These give the plant a shrub-like appearance and raise the green, photosynthetically active shoots above the ground.
Selaginella tamariscina is one of the so-called ‘resurrection plants’. During dry spells, it curls up its shoots and can dry out almost completely. Once it has taken up water again, the shoots unfurl within a short time and continue to grow.
A beautiful companion plant and perfectly suited to shady corners of the terrarium.
