Squamellaria kajewskii
Squamellaria kajewskii (Merr. & L.M.Perry) Chomicki belongs to the family Rubiaceae and to the subtribe Hydnophytinae. The species is endemic to the Solomon Islands and grows epiphytically in tropical rainforests. A characteristic feature is its heavily thickened caudex with a system of internal cavities, which it shares with the other members of the Hydnophytinae. In contrast to most species of the genus, however, S. kajewskii to date, however no ant colonies have been detected . The ecological function of the cavities has therefore not yet been fully elucidated, making the species a unique case within its myrmecophilous clade.
